Bacchus The Net is dedicated to find the best Football Pub House Wine (FPHW). We will be travelling the country, frequenting all Football Pubs large and small with one key mission. Who tops the leaderboard for the best FPHW. Scoring will be based on 5 criteria, Distance to Ground, Football Memorabilla, Wine Quality, Glassware, and Price. To allow for a fair hearing each team will be allowed up to 2 pubs where possible. The best will be positioned further to the top of the page.
The Golden Lion - An absolute belter of a football pub. Filled with Sheffield United memorabilia and artwork. The walk to the ground is 5 mins, looking down at Bramall Lane all the way so its proximity is one of the best. The outside area is brilliantly painted, making it a great place for a drink! There was a whole host of wines on the side to choose, unfortunately not Vacu-sealed. The girls behind the bar were brilliant and quick with the order, though you could tell that it had been some time since the last glass of red had been bought on matchday as they were all very surprised. A small glass of 'Fair Good Shiraz, Australia' set me back £3.50. In a very clean (Almost straight out of the box) wine glass. However, the wine was incredibly past its best, sherry-like from the time it has seen oxygen and a bizarre oily residue on the surface which could almost be mistaken as food colouring. A big shame which tried but failed in spoiling the experience. Is this a football pub? 100% and the clientele inside were great fun. With great location, atmosphere, price, and venue in general, this scores highly. A higher score would have come from a newly opened bottle. More photos would have been taken, however as it was a matchday, it was very busy and I didn't want to get anyone in who didn't want to be. 74/100
The Queen's Tavern - N/A (not open at a sensible time on match day)
The Crown and Sceptre - 10 Mins walk away from the stadium felt quite some distance given how close The Queen's Tavern was. Really approachable staff, warm and welcoming, and knew how to look after their wines with the reds kept with vacu-seal and in the fridges. The wine, 'Le Taquin Carignan - Merlot Vin de France' was well priced for London £4.60 for a small. Very easy drinking red with subtle tannins. Obviously been mass produced with left in residual sugar and a palate of raspberries and strawberries, wouldn't have expected more for the price. The glassware was slightly unclean unfortunately, but not bad in comparison with others. Able to tell the wine had been open a few days, but with the vacu-seal it was good for the day. The overall experience of the pub was very good a shame that it was a chain (Fuller's). Lots of QPR memorabilia on the walls. Was it a true Football Pub? probably not, however it was nice. 72/100
The Butcher's Hook - A really great venue, especially as you are able to see the ground from the windows. Went on a matchday, so struggled to enter without a ticket, however the management were really good and accomodating. Great interior and the fact that they moved all furniture to the side to allow for more standing room was a bonus for a Football Pub, Chelsea shirts and flags all over the walls. Really well kept wine and great glassware which was clean. The wine 'Don Leocadio Garnacha, Spain' was a beautifully jammy with obvious redcurrant, blackberry, and earthy notes. £5.40 for a small was quite a bit, but the service and glassware made up for it. The bouncers were equally good fun and chatty. Is it a Football Pub? Yes, couldn't be anything else. 84/100
Tommy Tucker - Unfortunately a stark contrast to The Butcher's Hook in management. 5 people milling behind the bar on their phones, taking a good while to notice I was waiting to be served, asked for a small glass of wine and after a good few goes at repeating myself, the bartender still didn't understand what I was asking and poured me a 175ml. The venue itself is around a 5 mins walk from the ground but you wouldn't think it was a Chelsea pub, no memorabillia. Very nice gastro pub however. The wine itself, 'Stormy Cape Shiraz, South Africa' was served in great Chef and Sommelier glassware which was very clean. Full of tannins and full bodied, certainly a punchy wine for a house wine. Was it a Chelsea Football Pub? No not really, it is however a very nice pub. Shame the service can't be commended. £6.50. 55/100
The Golden Lion - A great pub for pre match atmosphere, however not much screams Fulham. The bar was chaotic and lively, which ticks all the boxes. The wine served was a standard 'Hardys Cabernet Sauvignon' which was date labelled, but had been opened for three days not vacu-sealed and on the shelf. Very generic wine, jammy and easy drinking. £5.50 for a small, expensive for what it is and in comparison with others such as Chelsea's Butcher's Hook. The glassware was a good Chef and Sommelier but was dirty unfortunately. With a 16 mins walk to the ground, it certainly lacks on proximity. What does go in the pub's favour is the size of the beer garden in the back. 65/100
The Eight Bells - Although this is designated as a neutral / away pub for Fulham, due to its distance to the ground in comparison with others, it was chosen. A lovely pub, inside and outside. Old with a lot of original features. The staff are really attentive and a good laugh. However, after having to work my way through three different bottles of wine to find one which was still fresh, it is obvious very little wine is served at the pub. The wine settled on was 'Ladera Verde Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Valley, Chile' in a glass which I don't think had yet been cleaned. The wine itself was very nice and fruity, full of primary flavours of red currants and blackberry. And with a price of £4.60 for a small was very pleasing. Great venue, great staff, decent wine (eventually), bad glassware. Is it a Football Pub? Not really, but it is still a very nice boozer. Again a good 15 mins walk to the ground. 68/100
